Domains and name servers

What is a domain?

A domain is a name that is used, for example, in a browser or e-mail to connect a user to a server. The domain serves as a more memorable address for the user while the underlying name servers redirect the user to the correct server.

A domain consists of two parts; a top level domain TLD (also called an extension, a domain suffix or a terminal) and a domain name (such as own name or brand). The different TLDs operate under different registers and are often completely independent of each other. For example, Traficom manages .fi TLDs and ICANN manages .com TLDs.

A domain alone doesn't do anything in itself because it's just an address. However, in order to protect the name or trademark of a company, it is recommended to order a domain alone even if there are no pages or emails for it itself.

The video shows how easy it is to order to a domain.

What are name servers?

Name servers associate domains with servers where pages or e-mails, for example, work.

Name servers can be thought of as phone books that combine the name with a number sequence. The browser or e-mail program asks the name server which number sequence that this name points to, that is, where to connect the user.

Name server settings, or DNS settings, refer to these combinations of names and addresses that name servers tell browsers and e-mail programs.

Through our hosting services, you have access to name servers for as many domains as you like. We don't have a limit on the number of domains connected to web hotels. Thus, you can use one hosting provider and its name servers for all your domains.

Our name servers operate in Finland and in a total of four locations and three continents to ensure the most stable and fast operations possible.

Domain and Name Services

The domain has normally assigned name servers at the registry level. These name servers are responsible for providing domain addresses, that is, delivering name server settings to users.

It is possible to set any kind of name servers to your domain regardless the domain registrar or hosting provider. However, it should be noted that changes can only be made on name servers that have been placed on the domain at the registry level.

However, you can set a domain locally (on the user's computer) to point to a specific server even before updating its name servers or name server settings. The domain can be set up locally to point to the desired server even before it is registered!

Instructions for different operating systems can be found, for example, in this article.

The following video shows you how to do it on MacOS.

The video shows how to put the domain to point to the server even before it is registered.
